Diving Equipment: From the Basics to Advanced Gear

Diving equipment looks like a long and expensive shopping list when you are starting out, and almost nobody buys it in one go. There is a sensible order to it: some items you should own from your first course because they only work if they fit you, others you can rent for years without missing anything, and a few you will only want once you know what kind of diving you actually enjoy. This guide walks through the full kit — what each piece does, what to look for, and the order in which it is worth buying.

What to Buy First and What to Rent

The dividing line is fit. Anything that has to match your body — mask, snorkel, fins, boots, exposure suit — works badly when it is rented, because a rental rack cannot hold every face shape and foot size. These are the first things to own, and they are also the cheapest part of the list.

Anything that is essentially a machine — regulator, BCD, cylinder, dive computer — works acceptably as a rental as long as it is serviced. You can dive rented life-support gear for years without any real compromise, and it is the expensive end of the list. Buy it when you know you dive often enough to justify it, not before.

The usual progression is: mask and snorkel first, then fins and boots, then an exposure suit, then a dive computer, then a regulator, then a BCD. Cylinders come last for most people and often never, because filling and transporting them is its own project.

The Personal Kit

Mask

Snorkel

Fins

Boots, hood and gloves

Exposure suit

Weights and belt

Neoprene is buoyant, so you need lead to reach neutral buoyancy. The amount depends on your body, your suit and your cylinder, and it must be recalculated whenever any of those change. See weights and belts.

The Life Support Kit

Regulator

Reduces cylinder pressure to something breathable in two stages: a first stage on the valve, and a second stage in your mouth. The single most safety-critical item you own and the one that needs regular servicing. See regulators, first stages and second stages.

Octopus

A second second-stage on a spare low-pressure port, used to share air with a buddy who is out of gas. Standard equipment for recreational diving, usually yellow, and clipped where both you and your buddy can find it. See octopus hoses.

BCD

An inflatable jacket or wing that carries the cylinder and lets you fine-tune buoyancy by adding or venting air. Fit and lift capacity matter more than pocket count. See complete BCDs and BCD accessories.

Cylinder and valve

Steel or aluminium, typically filled to 200 or 300 bar. Steel is heavier and more negative, aluminium lighter and more buoyant when empty — which changes your weighting. See tanks, valves and accessories.

Instruments

Pressure gauge, depth gauge and compass, individually or combined in a console. Even with a dive computer, an independent submersible pressure gauge is standard practice. See gauges and consoles.

Weighting Deserves Its Own Paragraph

More new divers get weighting wrong than any other part of the setup, and almost always in the same direction — too heavy. Overweighting forces you to carry extra air in the BCD to compensate, which makes buoyancy control twitchy, wrecks your trim, drives your air consumption up and puts your fins in the sand.

The correct amount is whatever lets you float at eye level at the surface holding a normal breath, with an empty BCD and a nearly empty cylinder, and sink slowly when you exhale. Do that check properly once, write the number down along with the suit and cylinder you used, and redo it whenever you change either. A steel cylinder and an aluminium one of the same size can differ by two kilos or more at the end of a dive.

Safety and Signalling

A surface marker buoy is the item most divers wish they had bought earlier. Deployed at the end of a dive it tells the boat where you are and warns other traffic, and in current it is often the only thing that makes you visible at all. See buoys and lifting bags.

A knife or line cutter is a tool, not a weapon. Its purpose is freeing yourself from fishing line, nets or kelp, and a small cutter mounted where you can reach it with either hand serves better than a large blade strapped to a calf where you cannot. A torch earns its place even in daylight, because water absorbs red light within the first few metres and a beam restores the colour of everything it lands on.

Add a simple audible signal — a tank banger or a whistle on the inflator — and a slate or wet notes for writing to your buddy. Writing slates solve more underwater problems than their price suggests.

Accessories That Actually Get Used

  • Anti-fog: A gel or a drop of baby shampoo applied before every dive. Cheap, and the difference between seeing the dive and not.
  • Clips and retractors: Anything not clipped will dangle, drag through coral and snag on lines. See clips and retractors.
  • Dry box: For keys, phone and wallet on the boat or the beach. See dry boxes.
  • Gear bag: A proper dive bag drains, takes the weight of wet kit and survives being thrown around a boat deck. See bags.
  • Spare straps and buckles: Mask straps and fin straps are the two failures that end dive days, and both cost almost nothing to carry as spares.
  • Logbook: Records the weighting, exposure suit and conditions for each dive, which is what makes your next dive at the same site easy to plan. See logbooks.
  • Save-a-dive kit: O-rings, cable ties, a mouthpiece, a mask strap and a multi-tool in one small box. It will rescue somebody’s day within its first season.

A Realistic Buying Order

Start with mask, snorkel, fins and boots during or immediately after your entry-level course. They are the cheapest items on the list, they matter most when they fit, and rented versions of them are the most consistently disappointing.

Add an exposure suit next if you dive locally, because rental suits are the ones most likely to be worn out and the wrong size. If you only dive on holiday in warm water, this can wait.

A dive computer usually comes next. It is the item that changes how you dive rather than how you feel while diving, and diving your own computer consistently — with your own logged profiles and settings — is worth more than any single piece of hardware you can rent.

Regulator and BCD last. They are the expensive end, they work perfectly well as rentals, and by the time you need your own you will have a much clearer idea of what configuration suits you. Buy the regulator before the BCD if you have to choose, since it is the more personal of the two and the one where servicing history matters most.

Care and Maintenance

Rinse everything in fresh water after every dive, and soak rather than splash. Salt crystallises inside neoprene cells, in buckle mechanisms, around valve seats and in fin strap slots, and it abrades from the inside out. A shared rinse tank at a dive centre is fine for a quick pass, but a proper soak at home is what actually extends the life of the kit.

The regulator has one rule that matters above all others: keep the dust cap firmly in place while rinsing, and never press the purge button while the first stage is wet. Pressing purge opens the second stage and draws water back toward the first, which is how the internals corrode. Soak, rinse gently, dry in shade, and store the hoses loosely coiled without sharp bends. Have the regulator serviced annually or every 100–200 dives regardless of how well it appears to be breathing.

Rinse the BCD inside as well as out — fill the bladder roughly a third with fresh water through the inflator, slosh it around, then invert and drain through the dump valve. Salt left inside a bladder ruins it from within and the failure is not visible until it leaks. Store it partly inflated so the bladder walls do not stick together.

Dry everything out of direct sunlight. UV is the single largest cause of premature failure across neoprene, silicone and technopolymer alike. Store suits on wide hangers rather than thin ones, masks in rigid boxes, and cylinders standing with a little pressure left in them so nothing can enter through the valve. Keep the whole kit somewhere dry and cool rather than a hot garage or a car boot.

FAQ

What should I buy first as a new diver?

Mask, snorkel, fins and boots. They are the cheapest items on the list, they are the ones where fit determines whether they work at all, and rental versions are the most likely to disappoint. A mask that seals on your face changes the experience of diving more than any expensive piece of hardware. Everything else can be rented for a considerable time without compromise.

Is it cheaper to rent or to buy?

For occasional holiday diving, renting the expensive items is straightforwardly cheaper, and you avoid transporting them. For regular local diving the maths flips within a couple of seasons, and you also gain from diving the same familiar configuration every time. The middle path most divers take is to own the personal fit items permanently and rent regulator, BCD and cylinder until frequency justifies buying.

Do I need my own dive computer?

It is the item most worth owning early after the personal fit gear. A computer tracks your actual depth profile continuously rather than assuming a square dive, which gives you considerably more usable bottom time than tables while staying conservative. Diving your own unit means consistent settings and a continuous record of your recent dives, which matters for repetitive diving. Rental computers reset that history.

How much weight do I need?

Steel or aluminium cylinder?

Steel is heavier and stays negative through the dive, which lets you carry less lead and generally trims better. Aluminium is lighter out of the water, cheaper, and does not corrode internally as readily, but it becomes buoyant as it empties — which is why divers using aluminium often find themselves light at the safety stop. Whichever you use, redo your weighting when you switch.

How often does gear need servicing?

Regulators annually or every 100–200 dives, whichever comes first, regardless of how they feel — internal seats and O-rings degrade with pressure cycling and salt exposure whether or not you notice. BCD inflators and dump valves should be checked at the same time. Cylinders need periodic visual inspection and hydrostatic testing according to local regulation. Personal gear needs no servicing, only inspection for cracked straps and hardened silicone.

Can I travel with all of this?

Most of it, yes. Cylinders cannot fly and are always rented or hired locally. Weights are not worth the baggage allowance and are provided everywhere. Regulators should travel in hand luggage where possible, since they are the most valuable and the most easily damaged item. Everything else fits in a dive bag, though travel-length fins and a folding snorkel make a noticeable difference to what will actually close.
